Award-winning hospital services at Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital begin in Utqiaġvik and reach throughout the North Slope region. Care that is centrally located in Utqiaġvik is increasingly available at home and in other communities. Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital has become the center of an increasingly agile health care delivery system that spans the North Slope.

The new hospital, at 109,000 square feet, opened in September 2013. It is a two-story structure with interior design features that integrate Native elements from the Arctic Slope region. All hospital services are located on a single campus. Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital serves the villages of Atqasuk, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Lay, Utqiaġvik, and Wainwright.

Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital is a licensed 14-bed critical access hospital, also certified as a Level IV Trauma Center and features:

  • 14 outpatient exam rooms
  • Ten single inpatient rooms, including two labor and delivery rooms
  • Four emergency beds
  • Physical therapy
  • Cat scan
